Rome: A Lifetime is Not Enough (Two days)

One could spend a month getting acquainted with just a fraction of all the interesting sites in the Italian capital. This organized tour of Rome explores the sites that make this city the most cherished ancient capital in the world. We start at the iconic symbol of ancient Rome, the Colosseum, where Roman gladiators fought and died, and then move on to the center of the ancient capital, the Roman Forum, before heading to the past and present seat of government, Capitoline Hill. We stop for a bite to eat near Rome’s famed market, the Campo dei Fiori, and end at the legendary Trevi Fountain and Spanish Steps. Visits to the Vatican and Vatican museum, as well as free time for shopping and independent exploration of the city are also included.

Excursion II

The Mighty Port: Ostia Antica

This ancient town was founded around 300 BC, and served as Rome’s main port city until the Tiber River changed its course. It is now a remarkable, park-like town full of beautiful excavations. These ruins, unlike many in Italy, are well maintained today. We start at the Porta Romana (Roman Gate), which opens to the Decumanus Maximus (the main access road through the city). We visit the Baths of Neptune, Agrippa’s Theater, Temple of Ceres, House of Apuleius, and other residences of wealthy Ostians. We end with a visit to one of the oldest synagogues in the West, and, of course, traditional Italian dinner at a local restaurant.

Excursion III

Middle Age Flashback: Viterbo and its Baths

This side trip takes us back in time to around 1200 A.D. as we visit Viterbo, the former seat of the papal court. Many aspects of the San Pellegrino district remain unchanged since the Middle Ages The Gothic Papal Palace was the Pope’s retreat at a time when the capital was infamously dangerous due to disease and regional disputes. The Church of San Lorenzo is the main cathedral of Viterbo and its ancient columns show scars from World War II bombings. We will take a stroll down Via San Pellegrino with its inviting towers and vaults, old wooden buildings, and charming shops. We end the night in grand Roman fashion by visiting the ancient baths at the Terme dei Papi and swimming in the 21,000-square-foot outdoor limestone pool, heated in part by Viterbo’s natural sulfur springs.

Excursion IV: July 25th - 31st Travel Exploration

Walking in the Footsteps of Giants

Embarking on a first-class train, our last week will find us exploring the ancient towns in the regions of Umbria and Lazio.  We will visit an Agriturismo and learn the art of making pasta and cheese, and participate in other activities of a local farmhouse.  We will also visit museums and immerse ourselves in everything Italian!  Full schedule to follow.
